Gut Health

The digestive system is one of the most robust systems in our body, housing tens of trillions of microbes and contributing to 70% of our body's immune health. It is with no coincidence that when our "gut" health is impaired, so is our overall health. And, when our gut health is restored, our overall health and immune system also improve. The gut-brain connection is also strongly linked, and oftentimes, gut health is a strong indication of neurological and psychological health. Getting to the root of impaired gut health can sometimes be challenging and may require investigations that are beyond food allergy testing. As a holistic practitioner, I evaluate the myriad causes for poor gut health and use a multi-systems approach to promote whole body healing.

Gut Health

What is gut health?

Symptoms related to the digestive system vary from person to person. Common symptoms include: gas, bloating, pain, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, brain fog, anxiety, allergies, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Because the digestive system is reflective of our immune and brain health, it is important to find the root cause of disease and restore digestive function. A key sign of a healthy digestive system is the absence of permeability in the lining of the gut - when the gut is "leaky," we experience one or more of the symptoms listed above.

What are common risk factors that contribute to impaired gut health?

  • Allergies

  • Food sensitivities

  • Stress

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Heavy metal toxicity

  • Environment

  • Lifestyle factors

What are common gut-related conditions?

  • Gas & Bloating

  • Celiac disease

  • Crohn's disease & Colitis

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) & Heartburn

  • Food allergies & sensitivities

How are gut issues treated?

Conventional treatment for gut issues includes medications, lifestyle support, and dietary changes.

Using my holistic approach, I am able to dig deeper and understanding that is going on at a cellular level. I use laboratory results to evaluate nutritional status, intestinal permeability, inflammation markers, heavy metal toxicity, food allergies and sensitivities, and much more. I also evaluate the mental, emotional, and physical health as connected health determinants, as they play an important role in our gut health. This is because physical manifestations of disease are often rooted in imbalances at a deeper level that is not necessarily isolated to a single organ or organ system, and rather, affects the whole body. My comprehensive health recommendations promote vitality and longevity, and are inclusive of clinical nutrition therapy, supplementation, lifestyle interventions, botanical medicine, and mindfulness.
