Endocrinology
Endocrine related disorders are much more prevalent than we can imagine, and they are rising. Such disorders include polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid disorders, and type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, it’s estimated that more than eighty percent of women experience a hormone-related condition in their lifetime, and oftentimes are undiagnosed or managed poorly. As a holistic practitioner, I delve deeper to understand why there are imbalances in the endocrine system in the first place, utilizing functional tools and testing to then offer personalized treatment plans.
Hormone Health
What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology is a specialty medical field that diagnoses and treats disorders and conditions related to hormones and endocrine glands/organs, which comprise the endocrine system. Endocrine glands secrete hormones – chemical messengers – into the bloodstream, which carry information from one part of the body to another. We have over fifty hormones, which regulate essential body functions such as: growth, development, metabolism, energy, mood, sleep, reproduction, and blood sugar.
What are common risk factors that contribute to endocrine disorders?
- Plastics, plastics, and hormone-mimicking chemicals
- Inflammatory and imbalanced diet
- Age and weight
- Autoimmune conditions
- Genetic/family history
- Tumors
- Medications and supplements
What are some common endocrine disorders I work with?
- Thyroid dysfunctions
- Adrenal Fatigue*
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Type 2 diabetes
- Metabolic syndrome
*Note: Adrenal fatigue is different from adrenal deficiency
How are Endocrine disorders treated?
Conventional treatment endocrine disorders include symptom management with medications, hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle modifications, radiation, and surgery.
From a naturopathic and functional medicine perspective, I first assess the risk factors contributing to the underlying cause of hormone imbalance. I use functional testing combined with assessment of mental and emotional health status, stress, and trauma – factors that are often neglected in understanding the root causes of underlying imbalance. Treatment involves preventative and personalized care plans including optimizing nutrition, education, supplements, botanical medicine, and stress management via various healing modalities. When one hormone is imbalanced, it’s likely others will soon become imbalanced. The power of breathwork and emotional healing are profound in bringing back balance not only in the endocrine system but also the body as a whole.
